XL Middleton provides with you with a hefty appetizer in the form of "In The Middle Of The Night," to tide followers of the funk over until his next full-length LP drops under MoFunk Records. Those unfamiliar with his cerebral twist on classic California g-funk will no doubt find two treasures in the form of "City Where I Roam (feat. Moniquea"), previously released on a Japan-only DJ Couz compilation, and the Mofak-produced "Lemon Face," a deftly-crafted anthem for those prone to unwarranted emotional outbursts, with particular regard to social media ("social NOTworks," as Middleton refers to them). He also brings forth two fresh instrumental tracks, the soulful "Chill, Everything's Fine" (previously released as a streaming-only track on Soundcloud) and the ambient "Cool Air." The EP's title cut feels like something not far removed from XL's "Tap Water" sessions, with heavy west coast synth lines balanced by icy chords, FM bass notes, and breezy vocals.
